Round Oak Dining Table

These lovely clients came to us looking for a truly bespoke round dining table. They had an unusual shape in mind, round but not quite round, they loved natural timbers and sustainability was very important to them. We designed this table to fit their brief.

What makes natural timber beautiful? For us it is the grain, the figure – the patterns. Even the smell! And knowing that each piece is absolutely unique. Quartersawn English oak was the timber chosen for this special table. Medullary ray flecks in oak are exposed by this manner of cutting and they reflect light. You can see them almost dancing all over the table top here. It makes you want to touch it and run your hand over it to feel the texture.

Scorched timber is beautiful, and the colour is rich and deep. The scorched inspiration for this table came from the ancient Japanese technique of Shou-Sugi Ban, which is still used today in modern architecture. The timber is carefully charred by hand, forming a naturally protective coating. The process is very time-consuming but results in a visually stunning and unique effect. The gorgeous, satin-black colour highlights the texture of the wood and makes for an extremely tactile experience.
