Hallways are often the most overlooked spaces in a home – yet they carry a big load.

Coats, shoes, bags, post, dog leads, sports gear, musical instruments… it all ends up by the front door. A clever hallway storage solution doesn’t just tidy things up – it can completely change how your home feels the moment you walk in.

Here are three hallway projects we’ve designed and made for families in and around Bristol, each with different challenges and priorities, but all with the same goal – practical, well-built storage that looks good and lasts.

We always start by visiting the space, taking measurements, and getting a good understanding of how the clients live day to day. Then we draw up a detailed design in SketchUp for them to review, tweak, and approve before we make anything in the workshop. Every piece is made to order, and we tailor each project to the people who will use it.

Project 1: Family Cabinetry in Failand

Failand is a peaceful village just outside Bristol, popular with families looking for more space while staying close to the city. This large, modern family home had a grand entrance and a beautiful marble staircase – but no practical storage.

Our clients needed somewhere for all the usual family gear: school bags, coats, shoes, gloves, scarves, even a guitar. With a big space like this, the challenge was designing something substantial enough to feel at home without overpowering the room.

We designed hand-painted shaker-style cabinets in Little Greene’s ‘Knightsbridge’, with oak benchtops, oak dovetail drawers and an oak veneered interior. The bottom drawers were ventilated with metal grills for storing shoes, and we added pull-down rails so the kids could reach their coats more easily. A bench seat provided somewhere to sit while putting on shoes.

We produced full drawings and layout visuals so the family could see how it would all work before we built it. Now, the entrance feels smart and welcoming, but still lived-in – a space that belongs in a grand hallway and works hard for a busy household.

Project 2: Bootroom Storage in Long Ashton

Long Ashton is just south of Bristol – a great spot for families, with lovely countryside on the doorstep. This hallway was bright and full of windows, which made the space feel light but left little wall space for cupboards.

At first glance, there didn’t seem to be a natural spot for tall storage, but we worked up a detailed L-shaped design that tucked into one corner and turned a window area into a practical feature. We created a built-in window seat with drawers underneath and ran cabinets around the edge to maximise storage without blocking any light.

The bootroom-style solution includes seventeen oak dovetail drawers, pull-down rails for the children’s coats, and full-height hanging. The cabinetry is painted in Farrow and Ball ‘Skimming Stone’, with English Oak shelves and black metal ventilation grilles. Soft-close hinges and full-extension runners make the storage easy to use and built to last.

We shared plans and SketchUp visuals with the family to make sure it all worked with their lifestyle and space. They’ve since come back to us for several more projects, which always means a lot.

Project 3: Compact Cottage Storage in Almondsbury

This charming old cottage in Almondsbury, just north of Bristol had thick stone walls and a cosy feel – but no storage near the front door. There was nowhere for coats, school bags or the day-to-day bits and pieces that come with family life.

The hallway was tight, so we focused on vertical storage. We designed a tall cabinet with drawers at the bottom, open hanging in the middle, and top cupboards above. It was just enough space to keep everything tidy without overwhelming the entrance.

We used a mix of oak veneered interiors and solid oak drawers and rail, with a hand-painted finish in Farrow and Ball ‘Railings’ – a deep, rich tone that suits the age and character of the house. As with all our projects, we produced drawings first to make sure the layout made the best of every inch.

It’s now a much more useful part of the home, and the storage feels like it’s always been there.

What They All Have in Common

All three of these hallway storage solutions were built for real family life. Whether we had lots of space or hardly any, we made sure everything had its place – from muddy boots to school bags. Every piece is made to measure, built to last, and designed to feel right in the home it belongs to.

We take care of every step – from the first sketch to the final coat of paint – so our clients know the finished piece will not only look right, but feel right too.
