Bespoke Ash Library
Nestled in the heart of the Somerset countryside, this charming old cottage with sweeping views over the Levels needed a space as characterful and considered as the rest of the home. The brief? A timeless, made-to-measure library to house an ever-growing collection of books, alongside a bespoke desk for quiet work and reading. We were asked to create something warm, calm and quietly beautiful – and that would sit comfortably within the rustic textures of the original stone-floored room.

We designed and made this fitted library from English ash – a pale, lively timber that adds softness and light to the space, with enough grain and texture to keep it interesting. Each board was carefully selected from sustainably sourced, UK-grown ash before being shaped and finished by hand in our Bristol workshop. Everything was tailored to fit the room precisely, making the most of the available wall space without overwhelming it.
The shelving was made fully adjustable using traditional Tonk strips, giving the client the freedom to rearrange and expand their collection over time. Clean lines and simple detailing let the natural materials shine, while the handmade desk – built to match – completes the room and provides a peaceful corner to work, write or read.
